Salvo poi chiedere, tramite l'istituzione da lei presieduta (FMI), misure di austerity a paesi africani con redditi pro-capite annui di 1000 dollari, con tanto di tagli alla spesa e privatizzazioni, in modo da costringerli a vendere quel poco che hanno, ovvero piantagioni di caffé e porti, ai grossi gruppi francesi (vedi Bolloré-Francafrique-FMI). Nel periodo della sua presidenza l'FMI ha avuto risultati disastrosi: come da lei stessa ammesso ha sbagliato i calcoli sui moltiplicatori del reddito falsando in tal modo le previsioni sui risultati delle misure di austerity. Errori macroeconomici gravissimi che hanno provocato il fallimento di centinaia di migliaia di imprese del sud europa, crollo del PIL e netto peggioramento delle condizioni di vita di milioni di cittadini. Ha letteralmente messo l'FMI nelle mani di Sarkozy con la famosa lettera in cui gli scrisse:"Usami come vuoi". Quando le chiesero se era d'accordo a tassare i più ricchi rispose: "Non sono d'accordo sul fatto che tassare i ricchi sarebbe il modo più efficiente di ridurre le disuguaglianze, penso che il modo più efficiente sarebbe quello di eliminare il differenziale di genere tra uomini e donne". Questa signora deciderà le politiche monetarie dell'Unione Europea, così come quelle italiane.
