20 years ago this weekend, we premiered Blair Witch in New York City. The 90’s were almost over. I was fresh out of rehab and still working catering gigs to pay the bills. I’d recently packed up a beat-up Nissan Sentra and driven it cross-country to make a go of it in LA. My agents told me to get highlights in my hair, so I did. Armani gave me some sweet clothes to wear for press. But even with my dope hair and my fancy suits, I was fully out of my depth for the ride to come. I came out of a reality-distortion blackout a few years later, wondering what the fuck had just happened. I’m often asked about my experience during this time, and the most truthful answer is, “it’s complicated”. But what I know for sure is this: 1. I made friends on this movie that will last a lifetime. 2. I got my foot in the door of an industry, where I’ve been fortunate enough to remain for over two decades, making a living doing what I love (most of the time). 3. Because we came from nowhere as a creative team; because we made this film with two nickels and a dream; because the reason our movie ‘worked’ was exactly due to its IMPERFECTIONS (and yeah, a lot of right time/right place) ... because of all these things, I’ve been the joyful beneficiary of HUNDREDS of stories over the years - stories from creators who were inspired by the same spirit to go out and create by any means necessary. This may seem frivolous compared to all the pressing work that needs to be done on our planet right now... but it’s still really important. It’s important to remember that WE control OUR OWN creative voices and that nobody can EVER stop you from making stuff. In terms of success and the rest of it, we just got really f’n lucky. #radioman

@thejoshualeonard Josh!, I saw BWP when it was fairly new, (either on dvd, or cable,??♂️?? but not in the theater)
However, LOOONNGG before you and Jess ever worked together! So, when she told me during The LIE that you had done Blair Witch, I knew exactly what she was talking about because I actually had seen the film a couple times already, and clips more than a couple times! So I did know a bit about this phenomenon of a low budget success that gave ignition and permission to any and every potential filmmaker’s dreams. Which that is one of the real unexpected beautiful results of this film, in the perfection of its intentional low production quality. The first time I saw it (again at this time having NO clue who Joshua Leonard was, or that I would ever actually know you some day!) ... I thought the film was in fact a real event with tricks being played on these camper/hikers by other teens; or maybe one of their own members at first. But, it was so badly filmed it was completely believable for building this fear!
THEN! After learning the story that this was an intentional, fictional movie, I watched it Again! And was STILL feeling like somehow yet this was based on real events, and possibly footage from those real events! I was so much so a believer in the potential for truth... it was within a reasonable doubt that these kids really experienced something of this films fear and events created by someone or some thing yet discovered! Enough so that the ending was always disappointing! ?? And, THAT is the true Brilliance of Blair Witch Project. And the inspiration of a generation of countless filmmakers.??

Blair Witch will always be one of my favorites! I remember watching it for the first time at my friends house. He lived by the woods and we were told that it was actually a true story! We watched it thinking it actually happened! It scared the fucking shit out of us dude! You have come a long way and you should be so proud! I know I am! You’re an awesome actor and I’m a huge fan! Keep up the good work!

In my top all-time favorite films ever made. And as an independent filmmaker, such an inspiration. Way to go, man. You guys were the punk rock of the film business and you showed the world that it doesn’t take millions to make a masterpiece. It takes creativity, talent, and (yes) some luck. The best art comes from limited resources.

I went with 2 friends to see the movie, the movie theater was packed. When we got out, one of my friends vomited her guts and the other couldn’t stop saying on the way home « that’s not real that’s not real ». As my myself l locked myself alone inside my house, closed every window with a chair under my bedroom door... Good times!

Still love it!!! Watched it at the theater when it just came out. After we went home and it was dark outside already. My friend and I were so scared ? Plus I didn’t sleep very well that night. It really started my passion for (VERY WELL MADE) horror movies!! So, thank you very much for that ?
