This is Darius Wesley, who I first met at a #BeatingTheOdds Summit back in 2014. Back then, he’d just graduated from North Lawndale College Prep in my hometown of Chicago. Growing up on the west side of the city, Darius lost friends and family members to violence and drugs. In high school, he was forced to uproot his life when his mother faced a series of health issues. At times, Darius told me, he just wanted to give up. But he didn’t. He couldn’t. It’s not who he is. Five years later, he’s channeled the lessons he learned while overcoming those obstacles into a marketing degree at Cleveland State University—becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. I could not be prouder of this young man. Looking back, Darius said, "I appreciate those challenges-–they caused me to reach back and remember the support system that I have in the back of my pocket. All of the teachers and coaches that believe in me as a player, as a student, as a person. My mother, sisters, and brothers are all looking for me to just do better." Next Tuesday, Darius will once again join me in DC for our 5th anniversary #BeatingTheOdds Summit with @ReachHigher—one of the most inspiring days of the year. And in the meantime, I want to hear from all of you: Who's a young person in your life who is #BeatingTheOdds? Share their stories with me in the comments below. #ReachHigher

I'm really proud of my mother and now I will explain why. Long ago, when she was a child, her parents didn't have enough money to pay for private lessons and courses. It was utterly difficult for her to decide which speciality at university to choose, because no one in her family could advise her. Her parents never went to university themselves. My mother was torn between studying economics and informatics. The second one won, but the biggest problem was that mom couldn't afford to buy her own computer. And of course, she had to provide herself with one sooner or later. In order to do this, she found a job in a small factory. Her mother suffered from cancer so mom was supposed to pay for her treatment as well. Finally, my mother bought a computer and graduated successfully from university. After that, she wanted to become a teacher in IT, but because of scams and people who were employed by pulling strings she didn't fulfilled her dream. Despite this, I couldn't imagine my success without her support. Even when we had financial problems, my mother kept telling me that no matter how much money we have, she and my father will pay for everything I need to finish my education. I remember her generosity as I decided to apply at the oldest American college out of the USA in the capital of my home country. She knew that we have never had much money and despite this fact, she didn't give up and struggled to pay for a preparation course. Sometimes we didn't have enough money to buy food or to go on a cheap holiday, but 2/3 of the budget we spent on my course and also on books for me. In the end, I failed the admission exam and I blame only myself for this, not my wonderful teachers and my generous parents. Although I had the chance to change my life for the better, I didn't study enough, because I relied on the fact I was attending specialized classes. I was feeling genuinely awful, but my mother also. It was one of her biggest dreams to see me as a college girl at ACS. Nevertheless, she help me to get back on my feet again and go on. I started studying German at my new school and also now, when I face difficulties, mom stays by me and motivates me to follow my dreams

Regarding your tweet about “there’s a place” for natural born citizens and immigrants alike, when they work for openly racist people as Rashida Tlaib did (Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam newsletter The Final Call). Or tweet anti semitism as Rep. Omar did, only to have Linda Sarsour and KKK Grand Wizard David Duke rush to her defense. The country would would ACTUALLY BE LESS racist if these women weren’t here. When AOC seeks to upend our economic system to be the exact opposite of what brought this country to it’s zenith, ignoring history, economics and human nature. There isn’t room for these people. Immigrant or otherwise, regardless of race or gender. It shows total ignorance of our heritage and founding principles. When Rep Omar refuses to answer if she supports Al Qaeda, because people misinterpret “us defending ourselves.” She can’t answer “no, they committed the worst, most terrible terrorist act on this country. That country that I represent it’s citizens and the country I love.” Although that’s not much of surprise since she characterized 9/11 as “some people did something.” Similar to your turncoat husband being unwilling to call certain incidents attacks based in Islamic radicalism or terrorism. Even calling it that, only pointing to the extremists, he couldn’t do. You have to identify the problem to solve the problem. The ONLY reason we’re glad your husband was elected president, was to piss people off enough to elect someone who actually takes care of Americans, and gets things done. Despite Democrats best, almost overwhelming, unparalleled and unpatriotic efforts.

As an eighth grade language arts teacher, one of the greatest joys of my work is seeing former students flourish as they continue their academic careers. There are many students I could celebrate, but one stands out in my mind at present. My former student, Jean, is a rising senior in Charlotte, NC. Jean immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba in 5th grade. Since that time, he and his family have been the living embodiment of the American Dream. In addition to maintaining a stellar academic record, Jean founded a student organization within his high school which teaches and celebrates Latin dance. He works as a swim instructor at the local YMCA and was chosen to participate in a prestigious local internship within our superior court system. I am proud of his initiative, drive, and humility. What I most admire, though, is his belief in "lifting as he climbs." He is constantly encouraging and motivating his peers with complete sincerity. Jean reminds them, as his devoted mother reminds him: "Vale la pena"/"It's worth it." First Lady, thank you for this opportunity to celebrate an amazing young man. Jean, keep #BeatingTheOdds and #ReachingHigher !

Congratulations to Darius! Me! I am one of the 99.9% of people that is #beatingtheodds I couldn’t finish my diploma in 2008 because of my family financial status. I had to step back to hustle while my younger ones goes to school. It’s not a dream I wished for myself but I gotta do what I gotta do, to keep the family moving. I was one of the best student in metallurgical engineering department 2008/2010 at yaba college of technology, yaba Lagos Nigeria. I tried so hard that I never gave up because I refuse to put my family name on line because of me not trying enough. I dropped out of school in 2011, but now, because I never give up, I will be finishing my bachelors in business administration major in marketing in a university in Europe where am currently studying now. I never give up and I am not planning to give up! Yes am 30 years of age, I still don’t have enough money to pursue my career in engineering but I found another major which still befits me and that’s what am currently doing. Self sponsored and no help from family or friends. I will still never give up. I shall @reachhigher2020 and I will testify good 💪🏿

I volunteered with a 5 year old who was taken from an abusive family & raised in a group home. At 19 she chose to become a homeless person so she could use her SSI check for drugs etc. I continued to see her regularly for a few years. Then there was a gap of 10 years and she had 4 children all given up at birth. Then she called me again - with her 5th child she got clean & sober in a publicly funded program for 1 1/2 years. Then she started using again & lost custody of her daughter & we got her into an apartment where she lasted 6 months until she got evicted for keeping her neighbors awake all night & becoming a flop house for drug users. Then she went back to the streets. She just passed on at 48. So sad ... she did not beat the odds. ? but All of her children were adopted by the same family & are well loved & cared for. That generosity of spirit beats the odds ?. ????
