“Soon after her Byzantine-style half-dome mosaic was completed in the apse of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (fondly known as St. Bart’s), American artist Hildreth Meière (1892–1961) was commissioned to design a series of gilded glass mosaic domes and pendentives in the church’s narthex. For this spectacular cycle representing the six days of creation, she was given the freedom to work in the more modern Art Deco style for which she is best known. The church seamlessly integrates Byzantine Revival and Art Deco design details like Meière’s splendid mosaics into a structure that evokes Romanesque churches and a polychrome dome that pulls on Hispanic traditions.” –Charlotte Healy (@cahealy88), research fellow in our Department of Painting and Sculpture

honeysucklemud I love learning about Hildreth Meière. I first found out about her through OHNY when I was stationed at the AT&T Long Lines building in Soho and met her granddaughter. I keep hoping they'll finish the renovations at One Wall street and we'll be able to get in to see the Red Room soon.

grumble26 The architect of St. Bart’s was Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, who worked with Meière on many of his buildings. There are many other examples of her work in Manhattan, including the bas reliefs on the exterior of Radio City Music Hall.
