"Fashion is defined by change, not stasis," writes Vogue.com's Archive Editor Laird Borrelli-Persson (@the_lbp). "The past can inform the present, but a moto jacket, however fierce, does not a punk make. Past fashions dressed up as new are but costumes because they exist in a vacuum. The power of fashion—even its duty—is to mirror the world. It acquires meaning as it anticipates and reacts to current events and modes of living—and wearing." “Nostalgia is no good for the fashion industry”? There is no need to demonize the concept. It has become a trend for a reson, and that reason is exactly what fashion is supposed to do; to be the reflection of a society. We are part of a society that constantly romantacizes the past because many of us don’t feel that connected to the “immediacy over importance” thought of our times, that collective anxiety has made nostalgia a trend not only in the fashion industry but in any kind of commercial industry. During Victorian era there was also a constant nostalgia, the revival of the Middle ages, but something very true to its time was created, it was a reflection of a society going through the industrial revolution. During the first part of the XIX century, there was a collective nostalgia that longed for ancient times and romanticized the Greek empire, being so close to the French Revolution, the enlightenment, philosophy, human rights, the republic. It was a clear reflection of a society inspired by the past. It doesn’t mean that any past is better than the present or the future, one thing is to create costume-like pieces that don’t express anything contemporary and another thing is to be enriched by codes and symbols from the past to create something unique that represents the now and the near future.
