“How do I put something new into painting when everything has been done?” This is the question #GinaBeavers asks herself when working. @gina_beavers transforms images taken from the Internet into paintings composed from thick layers of acrylic medium. She focuses on the repeating fetishes of social media, including ”food porn,” bodybuilder selfies, and makeup tutorials. Join @MoMAPS1 curator Oliver Shultz (@olivershultz) on a trip to the artist’s studio to discuss life in Newark, New Jersey, the paintings in the show, and the struggle for originality in an image-saturated world: mo.ma/beaversstudio (link in bio) #MoMAmagazine

Artist Statement
In my work, I try to leave myself open to discovery. I explore each situation capturing moments in time and examing the way that light falls on a scene and the colors that are
reflected. My photographs are interpretations of visual reality. Distillations of color and form that represent the instant of perception unbound by any preconceptions or
expectations.

It is a curious and yet not widely known fact of logic, mathematics and physics that non-trivially complex, ordered systems of representation are indefinitely extensible. Art is unbounded in exactly the same way - there are always more ways to recombine, to reconfigure, to converge and to cultivate metamorphosis. Cultural, cognitive and ideological systems, similarly so. ❤️

Not sure if this is a useful question for an artist to ask themselves. Who cares if it is not new as long as it’s compelling and authentic from an artist’s lived experience. I just visited the art gallery at our local jail. None of the work was new but you did feel its necessity
