#Fbf to about 1986 or 1987. This weird kid was so self-conscious about these things, didn't want to do them, felt awkward and embarrassed by the attention, and did it anyway because none of the adults in his life ever listened to him.

I would hope after the "Me Too" movement, people in Hollywood would be more respectful of young talent. Now when I see articles like this it just reminds me of the number of rich American pedophiles who want to profit off the marketing of children and demand anywhere from mildly to hideously suggestive poses directed at creating a neediness from fans. To me, it kinda takes away that first person, figure out if you like someone over time skill from children. It doesn't allow young actors to determine what types of relationships they want to create with their fan base. If I had seen this as a child, my initial response would have been "Wil Wheaton doesn't even know me" (my parents divorced when I was 9 so yeah, I was that snarky). "He'd like me to get to REALLY know him?" You're just asking for stalkers with that type of statement. I wish for anyone entering the entertainment business as a child, the wisdom to ensure the person signing all the papers on your under-age behalf isn't doing it for ego or greed; that they hear you and protect you until you are old enough to protect yourself. ❤️❤️❤️

@viviedchien I mean, there’s a reason so many famous people suffer from drug/alcohol addiction, epic flameouts, suicide, etc. For the most part they’re just normal people, but with a high profile job that comes with a lot of abnormal baggage that nobody really warns them about before they start down that path (and that honestly is hard to fathom until you’re there and experiencing it, even if you are warned). And Hollywood is a very, very predatory place. Seems glamorous from the outside, but inside is VERY different. Wil has talked about this.
The ones who weather the storm find (hopefully healthy) coping mechanisms, put buffers in place between them and fans, try to stay off the radar and incognito when not promoting a project, and are very, very careful about what they say and do, who they spend time with, and where they go.
Examples of those who do it well would be Keanu Reeves, Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, etc. They have surprisingly normal lives outside of “work”.

Reading more about the anxiety you felt during your career, especially when you were younger, has helped me come to come to terms with a moment from many, many years ago. When I was teenager, my friend and I saw one of my favorite actors at the Burbank AMC. He was probably the first celebrity I ever saw in public...his picture hung on my wall. I know I was freaking out internally and may have come across as a stupid fan but I needed to meet him. The interaction, well, wasn't great...but it has stuck with me my entire life and since then I have been very cautious to approach any celebrity (this also comes with the territory of growing up in LA). I always wondered if it was me...or if you just didn't want to be bothered that day...or one of many, other reasons...but now, I think I understand a little better what you were going through...

As a parent of a kid with extremely high social anxiety, I can't imagine how all of this felt for you; I don't understand how and why my son feels the way he does minute to minute. I don't have the frame of reference because I've never been there myself. We just try to be there and help him day to day as we can. We're glad you're here and who you are, Wil, and hearing about your challenges and successes through all of it helps us persevere with our boy. Kids are so interesting. His sister is his polar opposite, with such high aloofness that remembering pants is a challenge. :)

@sam.mcroberts I understand .. .. That’s a real paradox while often in my everyday job I listen people thinking they will be more confident if they were famous...And... On the other hand I truely wonder what is a fan expecting from famous people and why is their vision of reality is that twisted ? (I really do not know and understand anything about that phenomenon) I just discovered instagram that’s really scary to see how blind people are ... In fact I discovered how easy it was for predators to scam people and that really left me perplexed

Sad the adults didn’t listen to you. I used to do stand in work and my friend Vicki was your stand in for the film called The Buddy System. She couldn’t work 2 days and recommend me to take her place. I remember meeting you and thought you were really talented and very shy and felt you were not happy being an actor. Nice to see your enjoying it now on your own terms.
