I'd like to raise for debate questions raised about the validity of the Bible. I saw this debate raised on a documentary currently screening on the History Channel. It regards the story of Christ's resurrection as told in the book of Mark. The documentary claims that much evidence exists proving that the resurrection of Christ did not exist in the original manuscript written by Mark but was added later by Christian monks around 400-600 AD. The original manuscript was altered becoming not only a happy, more compelling ending but a created a miracle & way to totally convince followers that the disciples witnessed or knew of Jesus resurrection. Marks original scripture told of the death of Jesus body being taken down off the cross by Mary Magdalene, washed & put into a cave that was then sealed off. That was the ending of Marks story. Modern technology, using scanning, shows how the original ending & its text was written over, again & again over centuries. Was the original text seen by monks as being not compelling enough for the Christian cause, thus the resurrection story was added to make the bible more convincing. It is human nature to rewrite history, to create stories & bury others, to shock & absorb the readers minds is the aim of any author, this included. However if this scientific evidence proves that the resurrection story is in fact untrue, it puts into direct question how much else of the Bible is also made up, exaggerated or simply misleading. Obviously the premise of this documentary is to challenge the precepts of the Bible & what thst has led to in terms of the way we live our lives under Christianity & beliefs in miracles.
Here in Greece I've heard from various sources that the resurrection story likely lent from the story of the Esklepios, the Greek father of medicine who was the first doctor attributed for raising the dead, likely starting the heart again such a resuscitation. For this miraculous act Asklepios was charged by Zeus for hubris & sentenced to death. History is complex & we must know it better to understand humanity

@manubennett When I was in college I got my degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in English. I took a few classes that delved into the history and evolution of not just the English language, but all language. The overall syntax, vocabulary, and translation of language has changed so incredibly much throughout history. Think of how much the English language has changed just in the last three or four hundred years. We all understand the concept of things "lost in translation", whether it be spoken or written word. What many people seem to overlook is that while the Bible has been translated into numerous languages, those languages have also evolved over time; the Spanish that is spoken today is not the same Spanish that was spoken centuries ago. For example, we typically interpret the word "world" to mean our planet, but in ancient Aramaic the word "world" could have meant land, or piece of land- the area with which the writer was familiar. I, as a Catholic, absolutely believe that the Bible is not meant to be taken literally. I believe the Bible is a collection of stories that of course may hold some truth, but it has also changed and evolved so much over time that no one really knows...and that is where faith steps in. I think one of the many mistakes mankind has done is to try and fit God into a box and say, 'This is God, and this is what He expects of us'. Personally, I love not knowing and not understanding completely. I love that we have the ability to analyze and ask questions and wonder. The one thing that I take away from the Bible is to simply love. Be an example of love in as many ways as you can. I really admire you and your work. Thank you for posting this. I think it's awesome!

It’s really sad to hear everyone who has had a negative experience growing up in church and being told that they cannot ask any questions about God and/or the Bible or cannot have any doubts. I have experience nothing like this. My parents encouraged us to ask questions, because sometimes only by asking will you get a reply.
In response to your message @manubennett I am not theologian nor historian, but I can say that when I had a genetic disease after praying, Jesus healed me. Sometimes the best way to see if something is real or not, is to test it out :)

Depends on your viewpoint. Some people think the Bible was handed down as-is from God's hand Himself. Others of us see it as the Hand of God touching people and them writing down their divine experiences. The Bible with it's additions and deletions are, IMO, dealing with written letters and testimony from non-Apostles that were gathered and added as located, deletions based on things like popularity (they wouldn't have wanted to make women 'uppity' by including the Gospel of Mary), doctrinal shifts (gnostic books are gone), etc.

@manubennet ....debate is ok...but may I comment to that, that these are words, questions, debates etc convincing the mind, when I strongly believe that faith in God is a case of the heart, not the mind. Once Jesus touched your heart in 'that'way , you won't need convincing of any kind , your heart knows...I hope and pray you will ask Him for a sign ...they who ask shall be answered. But He never breaks down a closed door..so please keep it open. You are clearly made perfect by God.and he loves you for being you. And so do I.

I especially enjoy the extraterrestrial theories about the Bible - like how Moses spoke to aliens and the Arc was a radioactive device. Really stretches the mind. There a lot of good general ideas and sentiments in the Bible, and a good portion is likely based on true events, but taking every word as 100% true of /anything/ is ludicrous. Especially when it's so dang old and we are supposed to EVOLVE and learn from the past, not get sucked back into it.

Israeli archaeologist, Gabriel Barkay, says you can’t take the Bible as historical evidence, but as a moral guide to be a better human. Rabi David Wolpe says, ‘You can prove or disprove the Bible, but you can’t prove or disprove faith’. The Bible is incomplete because men decided what should and shouldn’t be included. My ass starts to itch whenever mankind starts to interpret what God is intending. Too much arrogance.
