“The Eagle has landed.” Fifty years ago today, history was made when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed lunar module Eagle on the Moon and took humanity’s first steps on its surface. Armstrong and Aldrin explored the Moon, collected Moon rocks and conducted experiments. 🌑
When their spacewalk came to an end, they boarded Eagle to return to the orbiting command module Columbia. The lunar module on display at @airandspacemuseum is a never-flown LM built for an Earth-orbit flight and used for testing on Earth. Why? All flown lunar modules, including Eagle, were left in space.
Left behind on the leg of the lunar module was a plaque declaring “We came in peace for all mankind.” This is @airandspacemuseum signing off—follow us if you love space, aviation, and #IdeasThatDefy.

acmelrose I remember my family of four watching this on a tiny b&w TV on our kitchen table when I was 6 years old. My dad took photos of the TV images, we still have the memories, maybe even the slides xo

birdshot127 When I watch the videos of that I remember how tense we were “contact light on” reminds me of my grandad who worked on the design of the lander’s pontoon style feet and those contact sensors.
