At age 19, I had no idea what I would be doing a week later, much less a decade or two. Putting up stickers was fun, and that was enough to get the ball rolling. The act of getting out there for the journey without a brilliant plan or destination opened my eyes to the world as a participant, not a voyeur. Part of the success of Obey Giant has been its organic evolution based on my constant dialogue with the public and my broadening perspective through my experiences. Rather than being constrained by Obey Giant, I've molded it to reflect my personality and my interests as they've progressed over the years. - Shepard

Little did you know you would later be used by the establishment to promote propaganda ..putting glitter on hijabs glorifies a sexist religion .. hijab-wearing Muslim woman didn’t make the artwork. “It was created by a non Muslim white man .. the woman originally photographed for the image, Muslim-American model Munira Ahmed, doesn’t actually wear the hijab, “and rather just donned it for the purpose of creating this image, which is even more problematic.. congratulations the establishment used your art to promote a certain narrative.. meanwhile millions of women in the Muslim world suffer daily due to strict guardianship .. they are in fear of beating beautiful or sexy because they will be beat or worst killed .. you think putting lipstick on and glitter will change the harsh reality you’re mistaken .. ??

I skated with you on Sullivan’s Island the summer of 93 when you started printing those stickers. I still got the handful you gave me. What’s weird was that next spring a dude almost beaned me with a golf disc. Flipped over, there was the sticker. In Austin TX! Mind blown. Reality modified for good.

@obeygiant when I was growing up in Providence in the 90s, we used to carry your stickers around so we could put them up in the most interesting places. It felt like rebellion and belonging, a way to shout the wordless frustration of being a kid.

@dr._mantis_toboggan_m.d._ I would say you kept a level of decorum I appreciate sir. Setting MY feelings aside, being skeptical of power is not something I would want to discourage thanks for your time

You're a true inspiration. Had fun watching you do our johnny cash mural in sac on my hotel & I'm still finding your random "sticker stomping" art that you left all around sac :) come back soon!
