So on our recent sojourn up the I-5 through Washington State we swung off of that mighty, life-giving freeway (the Mississippi River of the western states) to visit the houses I grew up in. We didn’t knock on any doors because that would have been weird but we did stalk some driveways (which is also weird). First up? My rental home in Olympia, Wa for K-2 (front and back), then our rented house in Lake Forest Park for 3-8 and the “fancy” condo across the street we bought and lived in for 9th and 10th grade. I also included my elementary school and it’s cafeteria/auditorium where I gave my very first performance as Schroeder in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Isn’t it incredible, for those over a certain age, the flood of visceral sensations that flow around your body when you visit childhood homes and those sacred, ordinary places steeped in memory?

I grew up in Spokane and recently spent a week there for the first time in ages. It's the cadence, I think. The rhythm of a place that makes it home. The further away I move, the more offbeat I am. Syncopation isn't necessarily unpleasant; I even find the novelty thrilling. But the comfort I felt being back in the inland empire was overwhelming, and I can't help but think it was partially from finally synching up with the people and city around me again. It was healing.

I did knock. The house was owned by Hassidic Jews. The wife was cooking for Ross Hashanah, but the let me take a full tour. The HIGE staircase only had seven steps! It was.all so much tinier than I remembered.

I did the same thing a few years ago. Memories flooded with clarity. It was healing, and spiritual. It helps me better get in touch with a little girl who didn't feel so much, or so I thought

Every time I drive by my first childhood home (which is in my current town) I can still pick out the exact tree I used to play under and sit with my old dog that died. Chokes me up every time.

About ten miles south of Tacoma, WA I-5 was at the back of my backyard for three years. Of the 70 some places I’ve lived it was my favorite ‼️Would love to live in the Puget Sound area again.

I recognize the Garfield ballfields! I think if I started from there, I'd probably be able to come close to your old house just by memory! Those were great days my friend!
