🐵🦍 Some exciting research is taking place at the Zoo, and keepers are leading the way! With two youngsters growing up at the Great Ape House, primate staff are taking the rare opportunity to study the gestures and spatial proximity between these mother-infant dyads. 👀 How does western lowland gorilla mom Calaya get her son Moke’s attention? And how closely does Bornean orangutan Batang keep her son Redd when other adults are sharing their space? 👋 Get the scoop about this ongoing research from curator Dr. Meredith Bastian and keeper Alex Reddy: https://s.si.edu/31mGySY. @buriascomarina their environments put them in danger and that’s the sad part. Deforestation, illegal pet trade, Bush meat, traps, snares just to name a few. They are probably safer in zoos right now and are endangered species.

Reminds me of Samson, a Lowland gorilla that lived at the Milwaukee County Zoo from 1973 until his death in 1981. He was a real character ❤️

Moke was born right after my daughter. I have been following his life and comparing him to my daughter’s journey. God bless baby Moke

@buriascomarina there are but not enough. Zoos aren’t perfect for some species they are better.
