Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | A butterfly catcher holds a sample of his wares near M’Bata, Central African Republic, which are exported to collectors all over the world through a missionary organization. Each butterfly species is associated with a particular kind of tree, and appears once a year during the flowering event of the tree’s life cycle. To catch them, the catcher walks along a forest trail, putting out daubs of dog excrement mixed with his own urine, and the butterflies come down from the canopy to feed on this pungent and nutrient-rich mixture. I was amazed to watch the most beautiful things in the world be attracted to such a foul concoction. As my mother used to say, “There is just no accounting for taste”.

They are awfully pretty.
Whilst I don’t agree with killing animals for ‘collections’ I do understand this is this mans living and is a very different culture to one I know.
Something I have learnt from travelling is that the world and the people in it are so diverse.
What we deem inhumane is simply a way of life elsewhere.
That being said, poaching / hunting purely for sport or trophies is awful.

Unglaublich schön und alle sind so groß. Diese Farbenpracht ja die Natur macht uns allen eine lange Nase . Wie dumm wir doch sind . ?

Surely capturing these beautiful creatures only minimises their numbers as they’ll have less opportunity to breed and lay eggs. So sad.

Butterflies are our natural gift not eat but look as they cascade through our natural environments

Anche le povere farfalle non hanno scampo in questo mondo capace solo di distruggere?
