Next, you quest into the unknown in search of your first bolt placement. Find a (precarious) stance, haul your tools up, and start drilling!

Neither @エミリー・ハリントン nor I had ever attempted something ground-up, but we figured the best way to learn was to just go and do it. Turns out being on the sharp end with a bunch of tools dangling from your harness, clinging to dirty holds and staring into unknown terrain, is absolutely terrifying. Who knew? 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I experienced fear in a completely new way and expressed myself accordingly 😅 I hesitated, doubted myself, and screamed general expletives into the wind. But I also drew inspiration from @エミリー・ハリントン’s nerves of steel and ability to push on in spite of uncertain circumstances. The scene doesn’t seem as scary when you’re in it together 😁

Today is my last day in Pitumarca. I’m unsure if we’ll finish this particular line, but we’ll try, and the experience gained has already been invaluable. Stoked to make this last day count!! 💛💛 #teamdangertaco @thenorthface_climb @ザ・ノースフェイス

climbonmaps I’ve always admired the gumption and tenacity of ground-up bolting. I can only image it reframed your thinking as a climber and now Route-developer. Often there is more space between bolts when done ground up, because bolt placement is driven by stance, time, and energy, rather than measured distance and sometimes safety to prevent decking. I’m curious, did those things impact your bolt placement?

kate.lejeune Ground-up bolting works you because of all the fear-shivering, hauling, climbing with drill, hooks, hammer, and bolts, and the drilling and hammering. Gasp.
