Thanks to @workandco Portland for hosting @benjaminevans from @Airbnb for a great discussion on inclusivity. It was great to hear him talk about the bias that all of us have and how it shapes our behavior. We all live in our bubbles of people who are mirrors of ourselves. I’ve thought about this a lot lately how everyone is trying so hard to tell the “other side” that they are wrong and that by doing so is making them double down on what they believe. Maybe if we spent more time with the “other” it would be easier to have empathy for each other. Thoughts?

It really depends. Sometimes divides can get greater - spending time, even understanding better the “other”, does not necessarily lead to greater compassion. And in design processes, it is really important to keep “empathy” from just being another way to reinforce the power dynamics of “here, let me the expert, design something for you the consumer”.

@notmannering yes, there was discussion around not assuming as designers we know the answers to the issues and really listening and involving others in decisions that effect them.
