Photos by @renan_ozturk | The ones who have the deepest connection to Everest are not necessarily those who have stood on top of it. This is a monk from the Rong Pu Monastery, which at almost 17,000 feet is just below Everest Base Camp. After his big daily mission to carry up water from the river far below, the monk invited us into his own living space as well as for a (crawling) tour of the weathered cave that the main monastery is built around. The cave holds the sacred imprints of Guru Rimpoche’s hands and feet. The oily, candle-lit black rock lining the cave clearly had history, the voices and energy of hundreds of years of prayer from monks like him. I’m not religious, but in that space there was some kind of magic going on. It was a soothing force that our team desperately needed in the face of the stressful climb to come.
