#MeretOppenheim’s “Object” (1936) captured the art world’s imagination, but she never received the same level of attention as an artist. Talia Kwartler, a former curatorial assistant at the Museum, connects Oppenheim’s career trajectory with the issues women artists face today. What unsung artist do you want to see on view when a #newMoMA reopens this fall?

Women and men are different. They want different things. In the past (we fight for changing this) men had an easier access to art. They choose art for men. Some women made things that were universal and they had reconnaissance. But we're few. And making art was difficult for women. Now things are changing. We have even more women looking for art than man somewhere. So the taste is moving too.

Marie Laurencin! I think now we really only hear her name because she was in a relationship with Apollinaire for quite some time, and much of that attention is solely reserved for France. Otherwise, she’s relatively unknown and vastly understudied in my opinion. Would love for her to get to share a bit of spotlight❤️

I remember seeing this piece as a kid, and it was just sort of this wacky, amusing thing. Then, as an adult, revisiting it at intervals over the years, at some point it went off in my head like a little bomblet. After that I knew I needed to stretch out my way of seeing; this I will probably work at forever.

More women artists and more LGBTQIA+ artists!!!!! There is so much beautiful, provocative/evocative, powerful art out there that society ignores or is unaware of simply because of who created it, but it’s crucial for the development of all art that we diversify the canon!!!!

Don’t show Jordan Peterson this. As he will explode at seeing something post modern and start believing that all socialists want to eat from furry bowls and dean silverware a Marxist idea.
