I had won two prior competitions - the 60° Battle and National Boulder Trials - but in the mainstream Singapore competition scene I still felt untested, unproven and was really nervous about the entire event.⁣ ⁣ It’s no secret that on my day I love the feeling of climbing in front of a crowd and nothing beats the audience in finals. So much energy to draw and share from the cheers and the groans. Although I didn’t win this time, I remember looking at the spectators after my final climb and taking it all in, stepping off the mat with my heart full.⁣ ⁣ Despair and disappointment are inevitable feelings that arise when I leave finals without a medal. I did think about how things could’ve gone differently for a little while and how it would’ve been nice, but there’s always a bigger picture. ⁣ ⁣ This past month, especially the weekend that just went by, I did things I feared for the last two years - I put it all on the line, for everyone to see. Winning is secondary - I’m just really proud of myself for facing my own demons. I didn’t want to try because I didn’t want to fail. ⁣ ⁣ I now have a new perspective of what failure is. This is especially pertinent in our regular everyday sessions in the gym where we fear being seen falling on a grade we peg our standards to, or when we stack ourselves up against our peers.
