As a kid, Nathan hung a poster of the universe on his bedroom wall—the constellations and planets and stars. His name was Natalie then, a girl’s name, which matched the gender assigned to him on his birth certificate. Think of the constellations: the bull, the scorpion, Orion, the swan. A constellation is the imposition of a specific shape on a random gathering of stars. It’s a fiction that only works if you connect the dots following certain imaginary lines. Natalie was a constellation too, the shape of a young girl with auburn hair that the residents of Scottsdale, Arizona wanted to see when they looked at this young person. It was comfortable and unthreatening to see a girl there, no matter how uncomfortable and threatening it made the subject. But Nathan always knew who he really was: not a girl at all but a boy desperate to break out. “I would look at that poster of the universe and imagine how I wanted to the world to be,” Nathan recalls, who since November 2018 no longer identifies as Natalie. “I would imagine how I wanted to end up and what I wanted to experience and feel. I’d always questioned why I wasn’t born male. That poster gave me the sense that the world isn’t as small as we think it is.
