After my finding Mr. Baldwin's home in the small village St. Paul de Vence in the South of France, I couldn't stop thinking how truly a rare experience being entertained by his brother David in the small charming home that JAMES BALDWIN wrote ate and slept. Everything was as it was when he passed in the very bed I was looking at. Upon returning to NY, I wrote an essay about the exciting time I had and called it MR. BALDWIN AND ME. I traveled to the cemetery where he was buried, sat beside him and read it to him. I have pictures of me reading it. I was also in the presence of Thelonius Monk not far from him. What a time I had

I had an amazing Extraordinary experience of visiting Me. Baldwin's home in the SOUTH OF FRANCE. I sought out looking for the house and upon finding his brother came out and greeted me. I knew Baldwin passed away there so I almost passed out wondering what the heck is going on. David his brother was looked like his twin. I was invited inside and he kindly took me in the room where James had passed in. I got to breath the same air and was surrounded by all his writing, furnishings and his personal belongs. What a treat. Especially since MR. BALDWIN AND ME shared being born in Harlem and had pretty bad treatment from family

Ima paraphrase; when Mr. Baldwin was interviewed in Paris, he said something about how white people see him as a “n-word”, and that they considered him their’s, and he said defiantly that he was no ones n-word, and that he decided how he would be defined. I watched that in the AAMCH in D.C. and that’s when it hit me how white society has historically dictated to minorities what they’re realities were. It was shocking, and I’m grateful for his words, because they snapped me out of some lingering delusions about how we move forward, together.

Being Black, gay, and an interior designer... this one really resonates with me! “The place in which I’ll fit... will not exist until I make it”. The brilliance, compassion, and utter realness of James Baldwin was/is everything!

Sonny’s Blues—just like the rest of Baldwin’s work; it called me out, made me catch my breath, & shed some long-overdue tears. It is as relevant today as it was when it was 1st published.
