America can ban assault weapons. We don’t have to live this way. Honor the victims of these preventable murders by getting involved (@everytown @momsdemand ) and finding leaders - whatever your party - that support #gunsense and VOTE

@chelseahandler I live here in EPTX. I have for almost 30 years of my life. Last night my husband and I had to have a conversation with our 7 year old son what to do if this happens to us. What to do if this happens at his school. What to do if something happens to his dad, me, or his grandma while he is out shopping with us. We told him JUST KEEP RUNNING and HIDE. His four year old sister sat at the table as well listening to us. He didn’t quite understand what happened this weekend in our community he didn’t understand yet he felt extremely terrible for the families lost. He buried his head into his arms and said “ I feel so bad for all those people Mommy.” He is SEVEN. Why do I need to be telling my son this at such a young age? Yes it’s our responsibility as parents to inform our children of the sad truths that are occurring now in this country. But in a city that has always been so safe a place where almost everyone living here would welcome you into their homes as one of them... the problem is HATE and hate that they are NOT like us! They don’t live in a community like ours. I have met plenty of military families who have moved here and say they want to stay here just because of how peaceful it is. How it’s nothing like where they are from. Idk how it is wherever they are from, what their communities are like... but ours is different and always has been. Right next to Mexico and all! It has always been SAFE here. And this should never happen to us or any other community again. 🙏🏻

Thank you Chelsea for always covering the topics that matter most. Multiple studies concur that mental illness is responsible for only about 3% of societal violence. This means that non-mental illness factors are responsible for 97% of all societal violence. Many studies also show that people with mental illness are far more likely to be the victims than the perpetrators of violence.
Countries with tighter gun control do not have the number of shootings or casualties as those without it. A gun is much more fatal than a knife or a fist. The potential lethality of a chosen means of violence is critical to the end result.
Also hatred, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other “ism” or “phobia” on the list should never be conflated or equated with mental illness. They are obviously not one in the same. To do so is wrong and only stigmatizes those with mental illness further. And mental illness stigma remains a big reason people do not access care and treatment that is available and effective. And certainly untreated mental illness prolongs suffering and can increase risk to oneself and others. #reachdrbeach #outreachwithdrbeach #massshootings #mentalillness #violence #nami

Is today the day we fix the social issue of no sense of belonging to counter the impact isolation has on low affect men who can’t think or are we gonna wait for an abusive man to change? Let’s ignite a peer based volunteer driven prosocial macrolevel community and resiliency building movement by taking San Francisco State’s critical reflection practice and spreading it through the public sphere. It’s like the wheel of awareness only lighter and in a group - so it builds socio emotional strength and is easier that meditating alone. It uses five prompts to get present and reflect on one meaningful event from the prior week. It’s a small group practice so we can gather in coffee shops, libraries, offices, pubs, barber shops, bowling alleys, dinner parties, wherever and everywhere 5-10 can gather for an hour or two once a week. It’s a harm reduction practice- not therapy - a protective factor - it’s also really fun.

The gun “well regulated militia” control should be like what Australia did after their last mass murder via an assault rifle: Like fully automatic firearms (“machine guns”) are illegal to possess in America. Australia outlawed them and bought back all of the semiautomatic assault rifles (high velocity and large capacity magazine capable rifles that were made for maximum killing power for military use). New Zealand is now banning them, too. It’s probable that many of the victims of the US mass murders (and please, let’s stop calling them “mass shootings”, mass shootings are what duck hunters do.) would have survived their gunshot wounds if they weren’t from high velocity rifle bullets. Manual action high velocity rifles with small magazine capacity would still be legal for animal control, hunting, and target shooting.

In April 1996, 35 people were killed by a gunman, wielding semi-automatic weapons at a former prison colony and tourist attraction in Tasmania Australia.
This became known as the Port Arthur massacre, and it was a turning point for Australia. Less than two weeks after the Port Arthur massacre, all six Australian states agreed to enact the same sweeping gun laws banning semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. In the 23 years since the laws were passed, about one million semi-automatic weapons - roughly one third of the country's firearms - were sold back to the government and destroyed, nearly halving the number of gun-owning households in Australia. The number of Australia's mass shootings dropped from 11 in the decade before 1996, to just one in the 23 years since. So yes, guns are the problem.

Things from 1994 cannot be applied to today. Do you want to post the outcome of this? Probably not. The numbers did not change. That’s why they got rid of it. Pistol and shotgun crimes actually increased and the number of gun deaths did not vary. Sure we “can” do this but to pretend it will help “dry up supply” or prevent or stop any kind of gun violence is completely false. It’s sad that it’s the people who down own or buy firearms and mostly the people who are protected by guns everyday who are trying to talk about, educate and ban them. No mention what so ever of anything else that would help this problem. Just get rid of guns. Wow. Way to push an agenda with no basis other than self satisfaction. 🤷♂️
