Cold and wet 2:00 AM wake up calls combined with 15 hour hiking days felt daunting at first. "During the first few days I began to doubt myself and questioned if I belonged in The Sierra. It was mostly the river crossings that got in my head. Despite being a strong swimmer, my weight and height were no match to the strength and fury of The Sierra’s rapids in one of the highest snow years on record. "These thoughts quickly faded as other hikers insisted on helping those that were smaller and not as strong in the rivers by carrying packs, linking arms, and testing routes. "I’ve found most thru hikers have a fundamental sense of independence. To fly across the country or world and show up at a trailhead knowing no one—there is a sense of owning one's survival and not needing to depend on others. If the Sierra has taught me one thing, it’s the importance of depending on others and accepting help graciously. For me it’s become clear the sum of the whole is so much greater than the sum of its parts. "Interestingly enough, out of our Sierra group of seven hikers—just two are American. The rest representing Switzerland, The Netherlands, England, France, and Germany. As it turns out—community, selflessness, and caring for others transcends cultures and boundaries. "Forever thankful for the humans that helped me over the crossings which allowed me to continue on this adventure."
