How does #Nikon100 photographer @dianarobinsonnyc capture the stunning Milky Way? “I always look for dark skies and tend to prefer the West. I like to shoot where there are interesting foreground objects,” says Diana. What are some of your go-to tips for capturing the gorgeous night sky? Photo shot with the #D5 and AF-S #NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens. Read more tips from Diana on our Learn & Explore page at the link in bio! #MilkyWay #stars #nightphotography

Astrolandscape shooting tips abound. Research the night sky position ahead of time (use a planetarium app, or photography-specific apps like PhotoPills, TPE, or PlanIt! Pro). Use foreground elements to compliment night sky objects, and vice versa (geometry, color, reflections, etc.). Don’t skimp on thoughtful foreground composition just because the Milky Way looks pretty on your display! Focus manually in Live View by centering on a bright, distant light source (manmade or natural) and zooming in as far as possible before turning the focus ring. Always double/triple check focus, and consider taping the ring with gaffers tape. Turn off vibration reduction if your lens has it. For whatever lens you’re using, shoot at widest aperture available (presuming image quality is acceptable at full aperture), and expose as long as possible without significant star trailing (unless that’s what you’re going for). Then, increase ISO until highlight details are just shy of clipping (check histogram on rear display). Taking a sequence of identical exposures and stacking with easy-to-use software like Starry Landscape Stacker can quickly overcome noise issues arising from signal-poor single exposures. Using a remote shutter trigger, built in intervalometer, or shutter delay prevents vibrations. And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use a tripod or other solid, fixed shooting base. 🙂

How on earth do you find true infinity on a telephoto lens?! I’m stuck using my 55mm prime right now, but I’d like wider.

Try the Nikon 20mm FX 1.8 for this shot next time. Would have turned out much cleaner
