Photo by @Tim Laman. I’m excited to be back at one of my favorite places in the world, Gunung Palung National Park in West Kalimantan on the Island of Borneo. Among other things, I’ll be documenting the orangutan Walimah who just had her second baby. This is especially meaningful because Walimah tragically lost her first baby (pictured here) in 2015 in what we believe was a case of infanticide. Now she has a second chance and her new baby is doing well. Stay tuned for more, and follow @saveGPorangutans to learn about how to help conserve the orangutans and all the biodiversity of #GunungPalung. #Indonesia #GunungPalungNationalPark #Borneo #Kalimantan #Orangutan @savegporangutans

@easterneyes sometimes it can be psychological trauma or if the mother believes the infant to be injured / sick. There is also a belief that male infanticide may occur in orangutans although extremely rare

Was there a reason she killed her 1st baby? Or did the baby die because it was healthy?
