It is one of the last remnants of the archaeology rich stone fields landscapes across Auckland. The land is now owned by Fletcher residential limited, who want to built high dollar condominiums on it, which would ruin these amazing sights. There is a fast growing group of Māori people occupying this land trying to prevent this from happening. These are the people native to this land that deserve to preserve their culture as they have already been robbed of so much of it. Without help from the rest of the world this could be a losing battle as I have already seen brute force being used on peaceful protesters by law enforcement officers. It happened to the Sioux nation on their reservation #standingRock in 2016 when president Trump ordered to continue the construction of the Dacota Access pipeline, ruining the ecosystem and sacred land of America’s natives. It seems as if there is little international attention to what is going on in Ihumātao New Zealand. I personally have not seen or read anything about it in the Dutch media and I am sure has been given little notice in the rest of the world. As tattoo artists and tattoo enthusiasts we owe it to the Māori people to support them in their battle to preserve their sacred land and culture. Not only for all the ethical reasons but also because it has done so much for us, giving us beautiful designs that inspired so many tattoo artists and tattooees. I have had the pleasure to have met and become friends with some of the greatest people I know who are native to New Zealand, and am proud to call some of them my family and wear their art in my skin. We are doing a benefit weekend here @schiffmacher&Veldhoen to help them pay for legal fees and support them to stay put and stay strong until they get what they deserve. Keep their native land that should be rightfully theirs.
