Baldwin's birthday was August 2nd.  His magnificent writing is unfortunately just as relevant as it was when he was alive.  This book is a collection of essays, reviews, and other writings, that give insight into the mastery of his writing and also his ability to name white supremacy...and how it is perpetuated and upheld by "well meaning" and liberal white people.  What often sticks out to me, as a white man who believes that one of the main purposes in my life is to engage other white people in anti-racism, is his ability to name the problem.

I believe that overwhelmingly, white people who denounce racism in its most extreme and obvious forms, refuse to look inward in a deep way.  We refuse to learn about and recognize the white supremacy in ourselves and in our own liberal communities.  And as a result, we give ourselves credit for not being White Supremacists, without actually dealing with the root causes of of the issue.  We overwhelmingly refuse to invest in anti-racism as a life practice and understand that this is our responsibility.  We love to talk about Trump, but we are severely lacking in ability to understand *ourselves*. And as a result, the whole country continues to be destroyed by racism. White people, we must summon the courage to truly look within. (Thx for the book @amberconey )

dtag101 Im gonna keep this short and sweet. But the problem stem from compartmentalizing people into diffwrent races in the first place. We may all come from differnt parts of the world and in sizes shapes and colours. But we all need to realise there is only one race . . . The human race. The faster we all realise this, the faster we can make a better tomorrow for everyone . . . I repeate one race . . . One love 👍👊👌

otsistohkwa @mattmcgorry Have you ever read anything by Vine Deloria Jr? He’s a beloved and outstanding indigenous writer. His work changed my entire thought world, he affirms all my hopes/dreams/fears as an indigenous person, and ultimately his work has altered my life. Read ‘Custer Died for Your Sins’ or ‘Red Earth, White Lies’. Both are invaluable.

lorinthemountains I need to dig deeper and do more reading of works written by black authors. As a white person, I do want to understand and use my priveledge to speak out when I see someone being wronged, I want all my world wide brothers and sisters of all races to have the same freedoms as I do without the fight.

anitramichelle You are a beautiful soul @mattmcgorry, I could tell from first appearance on OITNB. But I don’t want to commend you for something that should be done...but there are so many NOT educating themselves or having hard conversations. So kudos and keep doing what you’re doing!

ajgrapen What about the white people that are in poverty in the Appalachian mountains? Racism is perpetrated not only by whites but also blacks and all other races. What about Asian supremacy? Dont hear too much about that. Bc it's not trendy to talk about
