Safety first! 🐕🌊 teaching our girl how to find the steps. Any tips on making your dog more confident in the pool?

meganmac28 My Boston terrier is terrified of the water. He would claw us to death, dig his nails into our shoulders and arms trying to climb up to our shoulders anytime we would get in the water with him. My mom got a pool last year so I really wanted him to swim! I ordered him a life jacket off amazon and he loves it! He’s still not confident enough to swim on his own but it’s only been 2 weeks and he fell asleep in my arms laying on the steps the other day! Lol it makes them feel a lot safer bc they don’t sink. And it was only like $15! I would def try that! Its worth it for sure!!

petuniagram High value treats. Something she only gets in the pool or when she walks up the stairs. Whatever you need her to do. A life jacket helps them cuz they float and don’t sink if they panic. Once she’s more comfortable and associates swimming with steak treats (or bacon or doggy crack AKA Beggin’ Strips), you can phase out the life jacket so she gets comfortable swimming in case she ever falls in

fleurtjewilms This maybe sounds a bit strange but I have 2 dachshunds and they both hate the water and I’m kinda glad. I know they won’t jump in. They are not natural swimmers so in case of an emergency they know where to find the exit (in a frantic panic) but they stay clear of the pool otherwise. They aren’t afraid to come near the water so they don’t walk around terrified. Roo is smashing it💕

trix_gell I follow @wesleythechickennugget they’ve recently taught him to swim and love the pool. Including using a life jacket and tying in the dogs toy drive. It was so cool to watch Westley learn to feel safe and like the pool. Check out some of their posts. Youre a great doggie mama I’m sure you’ll find the best mix for Roo 😊

sophie_bailey89 I know this isn’t really helpful, but some dog breeds are not really not built for water. Ie naturally they dig, are hunters or receivers for small animals or rats, so naturally don’t have an affliction for water and don’t gravitate towards it. But if she likes it- have at it! Hope it goes well. Xx

femalelarrydavid get her @ruffwear life jacket- they’re the absolute best! i work at a dog pool and we like to ease the dogs in and let them get comfortable. we have a baja shelf that allows the dogs to walk around in the water before taking a swim. time and lots of encouragement will help!
