transartmodel I'm really happy to see that a diversity of representation of gender non-conforming, nonbinary, and trans people has been gaining visibility and ground in the Arts. And I understand the impulse to tie this representation to how gender non-conforming people were portrayed historically, in response to ideas (which I've heard artists voice to me) that trans people don't belong in what could best be called the canons of beauty. Still, anyone who uses the term Hermaphrodite should affirm that they're using a term that is stigmatizing to intersex people, and one that is closely tied to a hostile cisgender gaze.

jenny_tsakiri To all the people saying this is disturbing and disrespectful have you got any idea what this painting is referring to? There are statues of "Hermaphrodite" from ancient Greece so this is not some new-wave, politically correct version of some renaissance painting..it's just a painting of a mythical figure. The word hermaphrodite though has been used to harm lgbtq people so I get why some find it offensive. Now about all the homophobic people out here..take a chill pill it's not about you.
