This window provided a sliver of a chance to climb this jungle tower. - While my goal was to free climb Leve Leve, trad climbing through loose blocks of rain soaked rock wasn’t safe. Gear did not hold and tv-sized craters were dropping. We switched to @gazleah “Nubivagant.” - The relentless rain left the rock face totally soaked and muddy, with small cascades of water runoff. Given the dangling loose blocks, the route was a test of risk mitigation. It was a delicate balance of free climbing what was safe-ish, and supplementing with aid when the risk was too high to personally accept. - This was one of the most physically exhausting, mentally draining climbs of my life. - Why do it?  I had the goal to stand on top of this sublime feature that towers the island; an adventure that I didn’t know if I could do or not. It became my focus; I trained to prepare for the unknown and was excited and nervous by the prospect of this remote challenge. - There are so many levels of risk that envelop the layers of our sport. When I competed, I was climbing on plastic and the risk was minimal. Sport climbing outside, a lot of the accidents are human error. Then, when you switch over to bigger walls, you have the experience of this wild adventure, but also the danger of the given terrain at times increases. - This climb was more loose than I anticipated; there are portions of the wall that are like jenga blocks stacked, waiting to fall. - That said, when the rain stopped, the risk at least decreased a degree. I felt more in control of mitigating our movement and exposure. The close calls we had, had they not been that and led to injury or fatality, would it be worth it? Of course not. But that’s the tricky line of pushing for something like this and where I can’t confidently say why this was worth it to me beyond feeling in control enough. - I am so proud of my team.
