in 1985, I was invited to do a television show in Japan that featured talented kids. I was 16 and it was my first time traveling alone; the whole trip was surreal and intimidating, but it began my love of Japanese culture that continues to this day. The producers asked me to lie about my age (!) because the show only featured kids under 16 and change the name of the tricks I would demonstrate to make them more “Japanese friendly.” Skate trick names were already silly and theirs were even sillier, but I played along while holding back laughter each time.
