A friend’s cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming and scary, but don’t let that fear keep you from being there for them. When journalist Suleika Jaouad was 22, she was diagnosed with leukemia and given a 35% chance of survival. She’s now 30 and cancer-free, and she has some practical advice on how to support a loved one during this difficult time. 1. Research their diagnosis on your own. It’s emotionally and physically draining for a recently-diagnosed person to keep repeating medical details. 2. Avoid asking “how can I help?” Instead, offer concrete ways of providing support, such as driving them to appointments, babysitting, tending their garden, etc. 3. Keep your word as best as you can. If you commit to helping or visiting, follow through. 4. Don’t ignore your friend out of fear. “When people don’t know what to say, they often say nothing at all. It’s better to show up than to err on the side of silence. Your friend needs your love and support more than ever,” @suleikajaouad says. For more of her advice, visit the link in our bio.

10 years ago I battled and conquered breast cancer. I was supported through a mastectomy and chemo with the support of my family and friends, they took it in turns to attended every appointment. They were named my ChemoBuddies. They walked and ran alongside me, the cooked for my family, they made me laugh, they shopped for us and they supported my husband. They got us through a tough time. They are now the 9 God Parents to our children. Now ten years later one of my ChemoBuddies needs her own ChemoBuddy. My role? To walk alongside her, to cook for her and her family, to make her laugh, to shop for her and her family, and to support her husband and son. I am so sad to have to be supporting her through this, and yet, so blessed to be here to to support her.

I have a huge scar on my throat from Medullary Thyroid cancer.... I'm always touched when someone asks me about it... but it makes me wonder how many see it and don't.because they think it's shameful.... it's a part of me...

Wish I could repost this. It’s great advice from my personal experience with cancer. However, fair warning, don’t be hurt or surprised if someone reacts in a way you don’t expect. Everyone is different. Great spot.

It’s very important. When my mom was ill, I got support from so much people, even from those, who wasn’t good to me before. Or I just thought so. However, support means a lot, it helps to go through it.
