フィラデルフィア美術館さんのインスタグラム写真 - (フィラデルフィア美術館Instagram)「This series of images shows Pierre Auguste #Renoir’s “The Great Bathers,” before and after its recent conservation treatment. Following intensive research toward understanding the materials and techniques used to create this painting, treatment involved carefully removing discolored varnish layers and other old restoration materials. Prominent cracks were brought back to a level plane and stabilized to preserve the painting long into the future. Swipe to see details of the left-most figure—you’ll notice that after treatment, the shading and three-dimensional form of the flesh are more clearly visible, and the overall colors are vibrant. Swipe left again to see that the cracks are no longer visually distracting. Viewing “The Great Bathers” today, we see the painting much closer to how it appeared when Renoir declared it his masterwork. Look back to previous posts to learn more about the process of researching, analyzing, and conserving Renoir’s “The Great Bathers,” on view in The #TheImpressionistsEye through August 18. #RenoirConservation • This conservation project and exhibition are supported by Bank of America. • “The Great Bathers,” 1884–87, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
