#WorkoftheWeek: After having worked predominantly in black-and-white photography throughout his career, Rotimi Fani-Kayode shifted in his final years to producing large-scale chromogenic prints saturated with color. These images feature staged tableaux with dramatic directional lighting reminiscent of the chiaroscuro popularized by the Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio. In “Every Moment Counts” (1989), Fani-Kayode features two men: one robed in luscious red cloth and adorned with a pearl halo, the other resting a cheek on his bare shoulder. Evoking Christian iconography and infusing it with a homoerotic sensibility, the work exemplifies Fani-Kayode’s belief that sexuality and spirituality are conjoined.
