For a few reasons. It was supremely humid. There were Mosquitoes and I had no repellent on. The concrete was unforgiving. I slept out. And I cried. But not cos of the above conditions or the Sleep Out itself - after all it was legit only 1 night, we were safe, we had access to snacks and water - you’d have to be Dahl’s Veruca Salt incarnate to find any fault in that. Or you would need to have an impossibly over developed imagination to actually feel the reality of what this ongoing state of existence would be like, and I don’t possess one of those. No, to be that effected in this situation you’d need to have lived it, breathed it, ate it, slept it for more than just 1 night. More than just 1 night to gain any true insight. And that is what moved me to tears... tears of respect and admiration and awe in meeting and hearing and feeling the rawness of the kids and staff at Covenant House who know exactly what it is to live it, breathe it, eat it, sleep it. And that hit me harder than any concrete. Seeing these incredibly resilient and resourceful young people speak and laugh and cry and sing was heartbreaking and soul lifting. I feel like I just attended group therapy. This has been transformative. As the saying goes, empathy is what separates us from the animals, and I will add my own thought to that ~ experience is what separates us from ourselves.
