#ArtistInterventions: In 2009, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (@lozanohemmer) presented “Levels of Nothingness,” an interactive light and sound installation in the museum's Peter B. Lewis Theater, as part of the @WorksandProcess series. The performance, co-written by philosopher Brian Massumi and featuring Isabella Rossellini, was inspired by Vasily Kandinsky’s explorations of synaesthesia, most notably his experimental theater piece “Yellow Sound” (1912), in which he proposed linking the senses through levels of abstraction. Lozano-Hemmer used a computerized microphone to analyze live voice in real time and extract physical and linguistic data that, in turn, controlled a full rig of rock-and-roll concert lights, creating a color show that suffused the theater.

Since opening in 1959, our Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum has served as inspiration for invention, challenging artists and architects to react to its eccentric, organic design. Follow #Guggenheim60 to discover more artist interventions during our 60th anniversary year!
