Brazil’s Amazon rainforest takes in as much as 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year and releases 20% of the worlds oxygen, giving it the nickname “the lungs of the planet,” according to NBC.⠀
⠀
And now those lungs are burning at a record rate.⠀
⠀
The rainforest experienced an 84% surge in wildfires this year, according to the country’s space agency.⠀
⠀
The agency says there were more than 70,000 fires detected in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest so far this year — the highest number since records began in 2013.⠀
⠀
Smoke from forest fires reportedly caused a daytime blackout in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo on Monday, with strong winds transporting smoke to the city from fires burning more than 1,700 miles away.⠀
