According to "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" co-curator, Pedro Alonzo:⠀
Inspired by a Chinese propaganda poster created during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976) in the People’s Republic of China, Fairey transforms the work’s revolutionary motif into a new contemporary anti-war message. The poster was a call-to-action for the formation of a Communist army, believing that military might was necessary to gaining political advantage.⠀

Took my just turned 4 year old son @nate.hall to an @obeygiant exhibit in Dumbo in 2007? My son was so inspired by the art e saw that we went home and he immediately created his own artwork. When finished, he insisted we take it back to the gallery where we were lucky to find Shepherd himself, who happened to be there for a documentary that was being shot. My son gave zero f*cks in going straight up to the artist to show his own work, which Shepherd was unbelievably generous to tape on a wall next to his own work. So @nate.hall has shown his artwork next to @obeygiant’s! We were so pleased we purchased an Obey print and an original gun with rose, both of which we’ve proudly hung in our living room. My son was so inspired that he has continued his creative endeavors, in large part due to this experience. The end.

My fav memory would have to be the DAMAGED gallery, complete with free issues of the Damaged Times. I definitely took a few to give to friends who are also fans... and also working on the music consulting team for @hulu ‘s @obeygiant documentary. I used to work at skate shops growing up in California, and I’d always save up to buy Obey gear at my store. The leather jacket w/ a hoodie had my eye for quite some time 😎 Working on that film was a crazy full circle moment. And that Russian choir track was a tricky one to clear! 💂🏻♂️Lol thanks for being such a dope human, Shep! ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

I'm not sure I have a single favorite @obeygiant story. What is my favorite about Obeygiant is how the message and art spans generations. Ive been putting the stickers on my skateboards and cars for nearly 30 years. I think it was Pete Thompson who gave me my first sticker from an H Street demo at Endless Grind skateshop nearly 30 years ago. Ever since, the Andre face has stuff the test of time. Few things are really iconic anymore but I would argue that that original image is.

Favorite memory is definitely when I was able to buy the “P.O.P WAVE (GOLD) SHEPARD FAIREY X CRAIG STECYK III” print before it sold out. It’s my favorite art piece that I own. Means a lot to me as I grew up near Venice and love the fairey / stevyk collab as I’ve grown up surfing / skating in so cal

This is legit art for action, and no time more needed than now. The most impactful @obeygiant memory for me is the Hope campaign for President Obama. We can’t lose hope and we need a standout like him to help right the ship...or we will continue this downward spiral.

Going to your gallery in Boston back in 09 and seeing all your amazing work in one place. It was so good I had to go twice and wander around Boston to check out all the street art still on the walls
