After the apocalypse of the blaze, I stand in the swirling snow of ashes. Bamboo explosions fire off like canon blasts. The air smells like singed fur and agony. Many animals flee—so many more burn. Sloths and snakes, jaguars and monkeys, baby birds in their nests. And let us not forget the billions of ants and other insects—the list of creatures in a single acre would fill pages and include things we've never heard of. Things Science has never described. The loud warm, dark green beauty that was here just hours ago is gone. Now it is all light and silence. The greatest display of life in the known universe. Gone. . . . . If you are reading this, you probably feel like I do. You are shocked and horrified. But please do not be tortured by despair. It is not productive, and it won’t help the jungle.
