In a regular day, Issa milks his cows and goes grazing with the cattle from early morning before spending some time with his son. After that, he goes to the market in Kachia Reserve, Kaduna State where he drives his motorbike, meets his friends or visits his favorite barbershop as any other man of his age. Issa came to Kachia Grazing Reserve after the post electoral violence in Nigeria in 2001 when his village was destroyed and some of his cattle was killed as part of the attacks targeting Fulani people. He belongs to a family of traditional Fulani seminomadic pastoralists and now they are settled in Kachia, an area set aside for the use of the Fulani pastoralists with the goal of providing land for grazing and permanent water as a way to avoid conflict. Earlier this year I had the opportunity of spending some time in Nigeria working in a multimedia special investigation by @afpphoto about the Fulani, one of the last great nomadic peoples of the planet, a community of some 35 million people scattered across 15 countries in West Africa, from the Sahel down to the lush rainforests. Until a few years ago, the Fulani, also called the Peul, pursued their ancient lifestyle largely unnoticed by the rest of the world. All that has changed. Conflicts over land, droughts and ecosystem variations due to climate change and other challenges are threatening the Fulani lifestyle creating a crisis of interests and identity.
