Way back in sixth grade, we had to decide between taking Spanish and French lessons. An upperclassman told me if I took Español the teacher would show us some insane movie about a crazy Spanish actress who roofies some sexy people (Antonio Banderas! Rossy de Palma!) in her apartment and then interrupts a terrorist shootout at the Madrid airport. That movie was Pedro Almodovar's “Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios” ("Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown"), which was originally released in 1988. (I wasn't in middle school yet, for the record!) I studied Spanish for the next nine years and, sadly, to this day I can barely order at Taco Bell. However, from that moment, I became a lifelong Almodovar fan. It was such a thrill to be in the audience when he accepted the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement award at the Venice Film Festival, and they even re-screened that movie on the big screen! I'd like to thank my high teacher Ms. Marciukaitis for introducing me to a Spanish cinema icon, even if I could never roll my R's.
