This Charlottesville, Virginia, intersection was the scene of a hate crime in 2017. Now, it’s a symbol of unity. Artist and Charlottesville native Jake Van Yahres on Friday grabbed some white chalk and transformed the spot where two years ago a man drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. Van Yahres said he came up with the idea of interlaced fingers to symbolize people of different races coming together. “I've been looking at that crosswalk for about a year trying to figure out what I could do with it as an artist," he said.
