Photo by Joel Sartore @Joel Sartore | In order to move people to take action and save the planet, the Photo Ark uses eye contact, whenever possible. Much like this mandrill, we humans are primates too, and we rely on eye contact, along with body language, for 80% or more of our communication. At Team Photo Ark, our driving motto is this: As these species vanish, so could we. I had gone to Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea to cover primate poaching. On one of my last days on the island, I went to a bush meat market, and found this juvenile mandrill chained to the rusting frame of an old car. As a friend held up a black velvet cloth behind him, he reacted to seeing himself for the first time in the reflection of my lens filter. This animal was someone's pet, but there were laws on the books against keeping primates, so he could have been made into stew at any time if the price was right, especially being so close to the market. You can see more of my work by following me @Joel Sartore, and on view @SouthamptonArtsCenter co-presented by @ICP now through Sept. 8. #mandrill #PhotoArk #Savetogether
