Unions were literally the bridge to a solid middle class lifestyle for many- but especially for African Americans. The union ensured my family was paid equitably, that the children (me!) were educated and when things went wrong- as they did with my grandfather- that their brothers/sisters and their families were taken care of. Yes, most of us have today off. You may not realize why, but union are responsible.
