On January 29, 2016, Prince summoned Dan Piepenbring to his home, Paisley Park, to discuss a book project: Prince’s autobiography. In the months that followed, Prince openly explored ideas for the book, which he envisioned as not just a memoir, but a kind of handbook that would help artists, especially young black artists, realize their own power and agency. “It should teach that what you create is yours,” he said. Just three months later, Prince was dead.
