#WorkoftheWeek: “Close Your Eyes and See Black” (1969) is part of David Hammons’s iconic series of body prints, which he made against the backdrop of the civil rights movement in the United States. Coating his skin, hair, and clothing with grease, the artist pressed his body into paper dusted with pigment or graphite. Referencing avant-garde artists who had previously used imprints to make paintings, such as Yves Klein and Jasper Johns, Hammons further invests these actions with a specific history—one defined by black embodiment.
