Here’s a little #mondaymotivation for you a day late:

I’ve been reading #BigMagic by @elizabeth_gilbert_writer and it’s blowing my mind. Her book is a joyful exploration of living a creative life. She suggests that we are all creative beings looking for ways to express it, and if we wait around, refusing to engage and create until we’ve come up with the best, most popular, most profound idea, we will be waiting around forever. She suggests that we should just do it (and we all CAN do it) simply because it brings us joy. Not because of some external reward that may or may not come from it. Not because we will make money doing it. Just because it delights us to express our creativity.
Being in an industry where my livelihood comes from my creative endeavors can often lead to joy-stealing paralysis of my creative self. Instead of stressing about the end results, what if all of my creative decisions were made simply because I was looking for a place to find delight. What if I didn’t care about any outcome? What if the voices of the critics or the fancy people had no bearing on my decisions? How miraculously freeing that would be! I’d make room for inspiration to hit simply by being open to the wonder and the magic of the creativity surrounding me.

In her book “Big Magic”, Elizabeth Gilbert writes this: “The essential ingredients for creativity remain exactly the same for everybody: courage, enchantment, permission, persistence, trust- and those elements are universally accessible. Which does not mean that creative living is always easy; it merely means that creative living is always possible.” Courage. Enchantment. Permission. Persistence. Trust.

Have the courage to make something. Open your eyes to the enchantment of the world surrounding you. Give yourself permission to create without requiring any result other than bringing you delight. Persist in your creative endeavors even when you feel totally uninspired. Just keep at it anyway. Trust that you are human and therefore a creative being, and that it’s in your God Given DNA to express your creativity.
