I was in 3rd grade and my mom came to The Potomac School (just outside DC) to pick my brother and me up. Driving home, we passed the Pentagon; a blur of black smoke and flames. I was young and didn’t know what this meant, “we have been attacked.” My mind immediately jumped to fear of war; the old school version of battle fields and cannons. Little did I know that modern war (total war) would be much more destructive, detached, and ongoing. My mom encouraged me to write down what I felt. I submitted a small essay that ran the next day in the @washingtonpost Kids Post. I was scared and heartbroken, and I didn’t fully understand what was happening. This day still breaks my heart. I think about those who lost their loved ones. I think about the bravery of the first responders. And I feel this dark emptiness when I consider how these innocent civilians got up, went about their morning routine, and then, at 8:46am, the world; the world of those who loved them, our world, was drastically changed. While I have faith in Hope and Love, the heavy hatred that exists and causes moments in history like this to occur saddens me. My heart goes out to all mourning the void and visceral memory of this day. ♥️ through darkness, there is light. - Photo: Michael Conroy @natgeo」9月12日 1時02分 - sashadigiulian
