The artist of this captivating painting has long been the subject of mystery. 🔎 Over time, scholars have arrived at different answers, once ascribing it to Jacques Louis David, then to Constance Marie Charpentier. ⁣

Today, more recent research indicates it was likely done by Marie Denise Villers. Although she is little known these days, Villers was a gifted pupil of Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson (a student of David), and, if this portrait is by her, it was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1801.⁣
