The artist of this captivating painting has long been the subject of mystery. 🔎 Over time, scholars have arrived at different answers, once ascribing it to Jacques Louis David, then to Constance Marie Charpentier.
Today, more recent research indicates it was likely done by Marie Denise Villers. Although she is little known these days, Villers was a gifted pupil of Anne Louis Girodet-Trioson (a student of David), and, if this portrait is by her, it was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1801.
