And not the slap-you-on-the-back, barely-connect kind of hug but the REAL deal. If it’s not a long hug, if I don’t feel that heart to heart connection, if there isn’t a moment where we get to melt a little or if my soul doesn’t go “hey - I see you” - then we hug again. And again. I take my time with each person. I want everyone who makes the sacrifice to come here, to buy this book, to stand in line, to wait, to feel like it was for something. For them to leave feeling seen. Held. It’s exhausting, sure, spending two hours hugging and smiling and taking photos, but not until afterwards. It’s not until now, waiting for pizza, barely able to lift my right arm, that I realize I’m actually tired.⁣ ⁣ I got to look 500 people in the eye today and each of them reminded me of why I’m here. ⁣ ⁣ To the new mom who left her little girl at home for the very first time to be there - I see you. To the girl who just lost her brother and told me the story through gritted teeth - I see you. To the woman who brought her 3-month old strapped to her chest - I see you. To the beautiful soul who just lost her best friend, whom she had anticipated this event with for weeks, and decided to come alone - I see you. To the man who looked me square in the eye and said plainly; “thank you” - I see you. To the woman who didn’t say a word, but cried the whole time she was in my arms - I see you. ⁣ ⁣ All of you - also you who couldn’t be there. You, who are far away.
