When you look at a photo you tend to gravitate towards the eyes. If the eyes are bloodshot, or dull then it casts a completely different image. So it's always important to zoom in and take care of them with the rest of the image. Some photographers tend to overly edit the eyes, after all they are a strong focal point on the image.
